Every one of these tools is good at something, and for some of what you might want, one of them is the better answer. These pages say which, rather than pretending otherwise.

Lightwork is the better fit when the help is not only meals, when it repeats, or when you want the group to still be there the next time something happens.

  If you are filling a schedule you already designed — shifts, conference slots, a potluck, a booth rota — SignUpGenius is the more capable tool and it is not close. Lightwork is the better fit when help starts with somebody saying they need a hand, rather than with a coordinator building a grid.

  If the need is a care circle around one person — a calendar of meals and rides, kept private to people who were invited — Lotsa Helping Hands does that well and costs nothing. Lightwork is the better fit when help should be available to more than one person, when it repeats on a schedule, or when someone would rather ask without their name on it.

  If what you need is to tell a lot of people how someone is doing, in one place, without repeating yourself — that is CaringBridge, it is free, and Lightwork does not do it at all. Use Lightwork for the other half: the meals, rides, errands, and chores that need someone specific to say yes to a specific date.

About “free forever”

Free is not a novel claim in this category and we are not going to present it as one. Several of the tools above cost nothing, and POINT has offered a free tier to verified 501(c)(3) nonprofits for years, with thousands of them on it. If free is the only thing you are comparing, you have several real options and we are one of them.

What is actually different here is the shape: the person who needs help starts the ask, they can do it anonymously, the group outlasts whatever prompted it, and nobody receiving help has to install anything. Those are the things to weigh — not the price.
